Welcome

The North West Orienteers welcome you to the 1st Auckland Orienteering Championships of the new Millennium. Some of our most experienced members have been plotting for months to provide you a challenging and hopefully rewarding weekend.

Good luck, and thanks for participating, especially those who have travelled from out of town.

How to get there

From South: Take the Northern Motorway to Oteha Valley Road (Albany) turn off. Turn right along Oteha Valley Road to Northcross. Turn left at traffic lights onto East Coast Road. The forest is about 10 minutes north of Northcross on the right.

From North: Turn left into East Coast Road at Silverdale. The forest is on the left about 10 minutes south of Silverdale.

Parking: There is ample parking on the farm road adjacent to Registration. Please park on left hand side only. Beware of farm traffic.

The Map

The forest, also known as Weiti Station, consists of 90% pine with some patches of eucalypt in the flatter middle section of the map. The eucalypt has not been mapped with a distinct vegetation boundary because in places that boundary is not clear. The remaining 10% is very intricate native bush with good to variable runability. Watch out for areas of supplejack mapped as walk, good visibility.

The forest is moderately steep to undulating with very intricate gully systems and good runability. Some gullies have pongas growing in them and they are mapped as slow run, poor visibility. However this may vary from gully to gully and was drawn this way to aid legibility. The vegetation boundaries are not exact, only a guide. Some gullies have smaller watercourses that disappear underground. The biggest are shown as pits. Watch your footing. There are numerous ponds, only the largest of which are shown as uncrossable, but it is advisable to treat all ponds as uncrossable.

The main road that runs through the forest and some of the larger tracks are deeply rutted by stock, making running difficult. The edge of the forest is better.

If the day turns out wet or it rains prior to the event, the forest floor will be slippery, especially on the steeper slopes and in the native bush.
